Objectivity/DB: The Cloud-Ready Database
Cloud computing provides an innovative way to build highly scalable platforms while reducing the costs inherent in large systems. As architects rethink how they build these new systems, they must find technologies that not only run on low-cost, commodity hardware, but that are also virtualized and distributed.
Objectivity is the only established database technology that was architected as a fully distributed and federated database platform, making it a natural choice for deployment in cloud environments. Its benefits include:
- Distributed Architecture: Objectivity/DB's uniquely distributed architecture allows organizations to build a simple platform with a few nodes and scale to thousands of nodes without added complexity.
- Single Logical View: Unlike other cloud DBMSs that almost all use a central server architecture, Objectivity/DB provides every client with a single logical view of a federation of databases. Connections between objects in different databases are traversed as if they were in the same database. Objectivity/DB automatically maintains the referential integrity of connections if objects are deleted or versioned.
- Real-time performance: With Objectivity/DB there is no need to add a front end, in-memory, caching layer to your DBMS technology. Keeping the architecture simple and lean allows for high performance without adding complexity to the platform.
- Automatic data replication: Frequently accessed databases can be replicated to multiple nodes to reduce the load on individual processors and disks. Replicas are automatically kept in sync. Replication also reduces the risk of losing access to critical data in the event of a network or hardware failure.
- Handling Data Complexity: Unlike file-based attempts at distributed data management in the cloud, Objectivity/DB was built to handle all of the data management features that application developers work with, including tree and network structures, indexing, queries, and complex data with many variants, shapes and interconnection types.
- Virtualization: Every component of a cloud-based application should be able to leverage the benefits of virtualization. Applications written to use Objectivity/DB can be run unchanged in standard or cloud environments.
- Security: Objectivity/DB data servers can incorporate hooks for security mechanism required, making it possible for organizations to collaborate while maintaining control of their own data assets.
- Low Maintenance: Objectivity/DB was designed from the outset to be embedded in stand-alone environments, such as telecom network equipment. Our database allows for growth to tens of thousands of nodes without adding unnecessary support overhead.
Based on these factors, Objectivity/DB provides the most scalable, robust and stable cloud database management solution on the market today.
